The music sector, encompassing venues, festivals, and production spaces, contributes significantly to building emissions due to energy-intensive operations such as heating, cooling, lighting, and sound systems. Many venues, often historic or large-capacity buildings, face challenges like poor insulation and outdated systems. Addressing building-related emissions in the music sector is critical for reducing its environmental impact, with strategies like retrofitting for energy efficiency, transitioning to renewable energy, and optimising operations to align with climate goals.

On completion of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the role of buildings in the environmental impact of the music sector.
  • Understand decarbonation strategies for energy efficiency, renewable energy integration and retrofitting, suitable for music venues and events.
  • Develop action plans for buildings, taking into account specificities such as the preservation of historic venues and temporary festival infrastructure.
  • Apply regulatory and financial tools: Align sustainability efforts with international frameworks, EU directives and available funding opportunities.
  • Monitor and communicate progress: use tools to track energy consumption and emissions while involving stakeholders in initiatives.
